People often ask me where this site came from and how it got started. Here's the story...
The Skyrim Blog launched on April 1st 2011. When it first started it was a Wordpress blog, and basically consisted of 'breaking news' about Skyrim. Essentially it was started because I wanted to have something to do to pass the time until Skyrim came out.
To be honest, I never really expected many people to be interested in the site - but, gradually, one or two people started showing up and posting comments! As the game drew closer, lots of people started reading and commenting on the site, and I had to start thinking about what to do with the site once Skyrim came out.
The other 'problem' was that the original Wordpress blog, hosted on an ultra-cheap hosting plan, was starting to creak under the ever-increasingly numbers of people who were flocking to the site. It was obvious that something drastic had to be done!
After considering various options, the site was re-booted on the Ning platform - and morphed from being a one-man blog into a social site overnight. That all happened on October 17th 2011. The old site was canned, and the shiny, 'bells and whistles' site that you now see came into being.
Since then the site has continued to grow and develop. We've had a few ups and downs, and a few people have had to be...uhm... 'let go'. But, remarkably, this site has maintained a friendly, welcoming, troll-free ethos - possibly one of the few gaming sites on the Internet to manage that!
So from 2011 through to 2015 the site continued to grow and evolve. People would ask me 'Why is it still called The Skyrim Blog?' And the answer was that those of us who have been here since 'the old days' can't bear to change the name! Besides, blogs are still a really important part of what goes on here....
But as with with everything, time moves on. By 2015 Skyrim was almost four years old, and whilst we still love Skyrim many people had moved on to other games. Besides, there really are only so many tips, so many roleplay ideas, so many pieces of lore. Even Character Building has to run out of permutations eventually...
The announcement that Bethesda is releasing a brand new Fallout game in November 2015 provided the shot in the arm that the community needed to revive its flagging fortunes. Whilst recognising that many still play Skyrim, the reality is that a greater number are now preparing for Fallout 4. And so The Skyrim Blog mutated into The Tamriel Vault.
Why The Tamriel Vault you may ask? Well, Tamriel covers not only Skyrim, but also other Elder Scrolls games - not just those in the past, but those yet to come (Yes, we are uber-excited for Elder Scrolls VI). 'Vault' reminds us of the core gameplay mechanic in Fallout games, as well as serving as a good 'catch all' title for a site that stores copious amounts of articles, information, guides and lore in our archives.
So here we are in 2015. Ready to face a bright future covering both Elder Scrolls and Fallout games for many years to come. What started as a one-man spare time project now gets tens of thousands of visitors every week!
